Description

Now in its 11th Edition, the best-selling Essentials of Human Anatomy and Physiology continues to set the standard for one-semester A&P texts. With her hallmark clear and friendly writing style and meaningful analogies, Elaine Marieb emphasises the relevance of anatomy & physiology to students’ lives and future careers. The book continues to offer just the right balance of anatomy, physiology, and clinical coverage to make the content complete, but not overwhelming. New clinical photos in the Homeostatic Imbalance feature help students visualise diseases and disorders, and new integrated Concept Links help students make connections across topics and body systems. A new, more modern design makes the book more accessible than ever, and new specific references to Mastering A&P direct students to study tools and resources that reinforce their understanding of chapter concepts.

Written specifically for the one-semester course, this text presents a superior teaching and learning experience for you and your students. The program allows you to:

  • Bring A&P concepts to life and provide real-world context: A dramatic art and photo program features 3-D anatomy illustrations, process figures with descriptive step text, realistic bone art, illustrated tables, and new clinical photographs in the Homeostatic Imbalance feature.
  • Help students study and retain information: Effective pedagogy, including new Concept Links, Did You Get It? concept check questions, figure questions, and end-of-chapter review questions help students study and retain the information they need.

Features & benefits

Bring A&P Concepts to Life and Provide Real-world Context

  • NEW! Clinical photos now accompany the Homeostatic Imbalance feature throughout the text, helping students visualise many common diseases and disorders they may encounter in their future careers. The Homeostatic Imbalance feature emphasises the concept of homeostasis and stresses the understanding that loss of homeostasis leads to pathology or disease.
  • An updated, dramatic art and photo program features 3-D anatomy illustrations, process figures with descriptive step text, realistic bone art, and illustrated tables.
  • Systems in Sync figures summarise, illustrate, and explain the interrelationship of all body systems.
  • A Developmental Aspects section appears in every body system chapter and discusses how that particular body system develops and changes throughout the human lifespan.
  • A Closer Look provides chapter-relevant, timely information about discoveries in medical research and clinical procedures.
  • Focus on Careers present interviews with working allied health professionals to show how anatomy & physiology is relevant to daily work in their career.
  • Critical Thinking & Clinical Application questions at the end of each chapter challenge students to apply what they’ve learned to clinical situations.

Help Students Study and Retain Information
  • NEW! Concept Links recall previously learned material and relate it to the concept at-hand to help students understand the interrelationship among body systems and concepts.
  • NEW! A new design enhances the book’s approachable, student-friendly feel with chapter tabs for easier navigation and easier-to-read figure keys. Plus, learning outcomes and Homeostatic Imbalance features are now numbered for easier reference and assignment.
  • Elaine Marieb’s conversational writing style and consistent use of simple, meaningful analogies make the material less intimidating and more accessible to students.
  • Effective pedagogical tools throughout include integrated learning outcomes, Did You Get It? concept check questions, figure questions that accompany selected artwork and quickly engage visual learners, chapter summaries with integrated references to Essentials of Interactive Physiology, and end-of-chapter review questions that help students study and test their comprehension of chapter material.

Author biography

For Elaine N. Marieb, R.N., Ph.D., taking the needs of nursing and other allied health students into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy & physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While teaching at Holyoke Community College, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. This experience, along with continual feedback from health care professionals (including generations of former students taught by Dr. Marieb), has inspired the unique perspective and accessibility for which this book is known.

Dr. Marieb’s commitment to students extends beyond teaching and writing. Recognizing the challenges students face, Dr. Marieb contributes to the New Directions Program at Holyoke Community College by funding a staffed drop-in center and by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women who are returning to college after a hiatus or attending college for the first time. She also funds the E.N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College (which promotes research by undergraduate science majors) and has underwritten renovation and updating of one of the biology labs in Mount Holyoke’s Clapp Laboratory. Recognizing the severe national shortage of nursing faculty, Dr. Marieb also underwrites the Nursing Scholars of the Future Grant Program at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

Dr. Marieb is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Pearson Education Interactive Physiology® CD-ROM series. This text–Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology, Eleventh Edition–is the latest expression of her commitment to the needs of the students pursuing the study of A&P.
